Let’s look at how links effect ranking.

Links that point to your site are counted like votes by the major search engines. The more links (votes) the higher you rank. Therefore, getting links from other websites is very important.

One thing to note is that link building should not happen very fast or you can be penalized and sent to the back of the class. Google has had a policy that if you get too many links too fast you must be buying them and that’s a no no. Adding 50 links per month is a good rule of thumb.

Also, there is a quality factor to consider. A link from a high PR Site (PR meaning Page Rank according to Google) counts as a higher quality vote than a link from a low or no PR site. Page Rank of a website can be determined by installing Google’s Tool Bar on your browser and selecting the Page Rank option.

By building a good base of links pointing to your website, it’s easier to stay on top of the search engine result pages (serp’s).
