In this section, I’m going to address the very basics of SEO (search engine optimizing) that need to be in place before ever putting your website on a server.

1. Image Names - Every website has images but the search engines can’t see them. But, they do read the image name, such as image.jpg so why not name it one of your keywords! If a search is done on Google Image, your image could rank high for that keyword bringing the visitor to your website. So, when initially building your website name your images whatever your target keywords are. For example, if my keywords were cheap tires, I would name the images cheap-tires1.jpg, cheap-tires2.jpg, etc.

2. Alt Text Tags - An Alt Text Tag is what you see when you point your mouse at an image and a small text box appears with a description in it. The Search Engines see this as text and can then determine what the image is about. You should place keywords in this text to improve rankings as well.

Example:
<img border=”0″ src=”cheap-tires1.jpg” mce_src=”cheap-tires1.jpg” width=”150″ height=”163″ alt=”cheap tires”>

Point at the tire for an example…

Cheap Tires

Because most websites are made of lots of images, applying these basic strategies to your images goes a long way to improving page rank in the Search Engines.
